Unlike the bus network, Turkey´s rail network is poor. The Turkish national Railway is the TCDD and connects the Western Turkey with the Eastern ( for more information see also www.tcdd.gov.tr). In Istanbul there are two main stations the Sirkeci station on the European side ( phone +90 212 527 00 50) and on the Asian side the Haydarpasa ( phone +90 216 348 80 20/336).

You can choose between the first and second class, couchette or sleeper. All trains have a dining car. There are reductions for students, disabled passengers and seniors. Compared to European trains the trains seem to be dirty and elderly. There is a high-speed train between Istanbul and Ankara. Rail fares are cheaper than the bus fares. If you stay longer in Istanbul there are monthly railcards which are favourable and enable you to travel all around Turkey.

The Haydarpasa station is also worth a visit because of its interesting architecture, especially the entrance hall is impressing. The station can easily be reached using the ferry route Eminönü-Kadiköy and Karaköy-Kadiköy. Be aware that there a lot of cannons in the station areas! From Sirkeci you can use a short- distance train to Haydarpasa on the Asian side.
