Clock Towers in Istanbul
During the 19th century the Ottoman Empire experienced an Europeanization. Starting from the 18th century more and more Turkish cities and building lost their importance as defence positions. The architecture was also influence by this trend. GOOGLE ADSENSE
The seats of government used by the new Konaks, no more look like palaces, and were usually located close to the Bazaar or the mosque. Typical was that a clock tower was built close by. Also outside Turkey the Ottoman Conquers retained this mark of power, in Sarajevo/ Bosnia there is for example also an ancient Clock tower built by the Ottoman besiegers.
