Less famouse as the Haghia Sofia but very close to it is the Yerebaten Sarayi. This palace is better known as the lost palace and represents one of Istanbul`s gems. It consists of a 138 m long and 65 m width subterrain cistern system.

It was built by the imperator Justinian in the 530s and was used as the reservoir of the Yerebaten Sarayi. Above the cisterns a large basilica was built. The was came from the region of the Belgrade forest and had a high quality. A little bit it looks like a flooded cathedral that is carried by 336 coloums. Especially when the whole city suffers from the heat you can escape here and relax for a while. An insider tip is to visit one of the classical concerts which are organized in underground during the summer.
