Yildiz Palace Museum
The Yildiz Palace and its park cover an area of as much as 500.000 square metres and are a museum as a whole overlooking the Bosporus. The palace was first used by Abdulhamid II, and since this time grew and become Istanbul´s second largest palace. The complex contains several courtyards, pavilions, pools and voleries. The different pavilions house different museums and collections. The two main entrances are enriched by two tiny mosques- nowadays the main entrance to the museum is from the Besiktas-side. The northern part of the complex is closed to the public as it is used by the military and diverse institutes. The Yildiz Park is connected to the Ciragan Palace by a bridge. Most popular is the collection of porcelain workshops and the Sale Pavilion. After the fall of the monarchy the Sale was used as a high class casino, before being restored to its original function as a guest house for visiting heads of state. The pavilion is an important museum with its well-kept gardens, its exterior architecture resembling. Also worth-seeing are the in the garden located hunting lodges with its wealthy Ottoman furniture and inside decoration. At the left side of the main entrance is the Qt Pavilion where the guests of the sultan were used to be accommodated. You can also visit the former harem and its theatre. Besides the lodges and the pavilions the Yildiz Palace Museum itself and the Municipal Museum of Istanbul are also in this complex. The Palace museum exhibits carpentry workshops, wooden art-works, thrones and porcelain workshops.
