Later the tower was enlarged and served as a fortress. There are many legends about the the Maiden`s tower and its location. A legend says that the tower was built to protect the daughter of the sultan from a snake-bite as a fortune predictor had augured she will die before her 18th birthday. However the sultan's daughter met her fate : The sultan brought as a present for his daughter`s 18th birthday a basket of exotic fruits where the predicted death-bringing asp had been hiding. The tower is also known under the name Leander's Tower, which goes back to another legend: the ancient Greek myth of Hero and Leander.
