The Ottoman EmpireIn 1326 the triumphal procession of Ottoman and the Ottomans started by the conquest of Bursa. In the 15th century Constantinople was just a small enclave embedded in the Ottoman Empire. In the night of the 28/29 May 1453 Constantinople was finally conquered from the seaside. After the Ottoman conquest Istanbul symbolized the melting point of the Orient and Occident. Constantinople became the capital of the Ottoman empire, the cityscape was changed into a Islamic style. Many churches were destroyed , others like the Hagia Sophia were changed into mosques. The former citizens of Constantinople, mainly Greeks and Armenian, which escaped were encouraged to return and until today from the multi-cultural atmosphere of Istanbul.
