The Ottoman Empire

In 1326 the triumphal procession of Ottoman and the Ottomans started by the conquest of Bursa. In the 15th century Constantinople was just a small enclave embedded in the Ottoman Empire. In the night of the 28/29 May 1453 Constantinople was finally conquered from the seaside. After the Ottoman conquest Istanbul symbolized the melting point of the Orient and Occident. Constantinople became the capital of the Ottoman empire, the cityscape was changed into a Islamic style. Many churches were destroyed , others like the Hagia Sophia were changed into mosques. The former citizens of Constantinople, mainly Greeks and Armenian, which escaped were encouraged to return and until today from the multi-cultural atmosphere of Istanbul. The official name of the Istanbul remained until the 1920ies .

`Is tim boli` (means to the city) was written on all signs surrounding Constantinople when the Ottomans arrived. However , the Ottomans thought that this is the name of the city and started to call it Istanbul. So you can say Istanbul received its name by mistake. During the peak of power the Ottoman sultans spent a lot of money in to the beautification of Istanbul by mosques and palaces and a lot of them you can visit during your stay in Istanbul. The politic strategy and financial policy of the Ottoman empire together with intriguer Viziers was to generous and so already in the 19th century the Ottoman Empire has been weaken.

Modern Istanbul The final fall of the Empire was after the World War I with the declaration of the republic by Mustafa Kemal better known as Atatürk. In 1923 Turkey`s new capital became Ankara. The sultanate has been abolished, Arabic letters replaced by Latin ones. A voting right for women was introduced symbolizing the beginning of the emancipation of the Turkish women and the era of a modern Turkey and Istanbul.
